Castello di Stertignano/Ballotoio
Town: Marrucheti
An old country castle in the middle of gentle hills, very close to the Etruscan archeological sites of Roselle, around 10 miles from Grosseto and 15 from the sea. It was built in 1274 by the Aldobrandeschi, and in the wake of the Ente Maremma became the seat of the Cosini Family. They live further down from the castle. The building is built in layers. In the upper floor of the main building is Il Ballatoio, in the wing which was previously the stables is Il Ganaio. The large courtyard is still partly enclosed by the thick old walls. Garden furniture and loungers are provided. There is a small utility room with washing machine and ironing utensils.
In the ground floor of the main house is a large common room, with a kitchen. Here Roberta cooks Tuscan specialities for the guests, when ordered in advance. The room is otherwise available for games, or could be used for arts, crafts or music courses and other activities if the castle is booked for a group.
Up an external staircase one enters into the large living room with lovely kitchen area, with dining area and large open fire, in front of which is a comfortable suite and sofa-bed. The original old roof with dark wooden beams, thick walls and tile floor give this room a timeless charm.
To the left is a large bathroom with double sink and shower. To the right up the stairs is a bedroom with double bed and single couch (1.5m) This giant space, again due to the roof beams has a quite unique atmosphere, there is a further bedroom with two beds.
