Town: Rufina
Already in the 1970s the farm estate had begun a programme of restructuring farmhouses on the estate, pursuing a slow but constant return to the enhancement of the rural heritage and to a love for the countryside. Some of these farmhouses have been turned into holiday accommodation and have been completed by the recent restructuring of the eighteenth century FARM, partly rebuilt during the nineteenth century.
All the houses retain an elegant, country style, and are heated so the individual apartments can be used even during the cold winter months, when the Tuscan countryside loses its bright colours but not its charm, thanks above all to the evergreen olives and cypresses. The proximity of the Apennine mountain chain makes the landscape more forceful and wild, and the summer heat more bearable, thanks to those light breezes that come down from the mountains even on the hottest of days. All the houses have use of the swimming pool and enjoy a splendid view over Valdisieve, where the hills slope gently down to the river, alternating between vineyards, olive groves, fields of wheat and sunflower, deciduous forests, century old oaks and rows of cypress trees.
The beautiful nature and artistic heritage of the Valdisieve afford visitors various types of excursions, according to their preferences: a walk along “Giotto’s path” that crosses the estate (Giotto was born in Vicchio in Mugello and spent the early years of his artistic training in this very area); discovering the source of the river Arno in the natural park of Monte Falterona; or following the paths of Tuscan Christianity among country churches and monasteries, that bear witness to the places of worship of the time, which have remained largely unaltered up to the present day; or going up the Arno or Sieve rivers to discover the many castles and country villas built over the centuries by the Medici family, who preferred this area, east of Florence, to the Chianti hills which are gentler but too close to their enemy, Siena; or, dulcis in fundo, to enlarge on their passion and extend their knowledge of Chianti Rufina Docg wine travelling along the Wine Road to visit the winegrowers’ cellars, where this great wine matures, solitary and austere, beneath the silent vaults. Finally, no one should be surprised if, walking along, they suddenly come across ….. a pensive Dante with a book in his hand, or Giotto drawing a sheep on a stone with a piece of chalk: it’s not the effect of the strong sun, but the inexhaustible charm of this land that with the simplicity of the present, brings ancient sensations back to life.
A typical stone farm house dating back to the beginning of the century, completely renovated in 1997.On the ground floor, the original stalls have been turned into a big room with a fireplace and a separate apartment which has been named LECCINO. Frantoio and Leccino are the names of the most famous and most widely used varieties in Tuscan olive growing. Olive trees cover the sloping land that goes down to the swimming pool, providing a “custom made” Tuscan garden.
On the ground floor, beyond the main room, there is a large kitchen with a traditional hearth (where the farm workers used to warm themselves by the fire) with a dining room separated by a stone arch and two living rooms, one of which serves as a library.
On the upper floor, a long corridor in terracotta leads to the seven double rooms, often separated from each other by stone steps that make the structure more dynamic and animated. The rustic style chosen for the furnishing, the colourful drapes, the sober furniture, bring back that “rural” atmosphere that is often lost.
The swimming pool, situated on raised ground above the house, entirely dominates the Valdisieve. It can be reached from the upper floor, at the back of the house. Next to the swimming pool is a small barbecue area.
