Arezzo is one of the ten provinces of the Italian region of Tuscany. The province has about 325,000 inhabitants in an area of 3235 km². Capital is the city. The official abbreviation of the province is AR.
Arezzo is a predominantly hilly area, with in addition, four large valleys, namely the Casentino, Arno Valley (Valdarno Superiore), the Chiana (Valdichiana) and the Tiber valley (Val Tiberina). The capital city of Arezzo is the place where the Casentino becomes the Valdarno and the Val di Chiana.

Cortona is originally an Etruscan town in the mountains of the province of Arezzo, in the Italian region of Tuscany. The city was established on one of the earliest inhabited hills of the province and has a similar topography with cities like Assisi and Volterra. The city acquired additional publicity when it served as a backdrop for some scenes in Roberto Benigni's film La vita è bella.
The American writer Frances Mayes bought in the nineties an old house in Cortona, and totally refurbished it. There he wrote the book Under the Tuscan Sun (1996). It became a bestseller, a film in 2003, and since then the number of American tourists has been increased significantly, as the price of the property.
Cortona is situated not far from the border between Tuscany and Umbria. In the West spreads, the town wide Valdichiana Valley, with the backdrop of the Mount Amiata (1738 m.). It situated in Umbria Lake Trasimeno can be seen from the higher parts of the city.
The birthplace of Piero della Francesca, the famous humanist is definitely worth a visit. You will find the BUITONI factories and above all an interesting historic center. Fan of Piero della Francesca? Then you should definitely pay a visit to the village of Monterchi, where there is a museum with documents about the work and life of the artist.
